Lithuania was first mentioned in the Chronicles of Quedlinburg. In 2009 the country celebrated its thousand years of history.

XIII ème siècle

Creation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and coronation of King Mindaugas in 1253.

1323

Foundation of Vilnius by the Great Duke Gediminas.

1385

Signing of the agreement Kreva according to which Jagellon, Graat Duke of Lithuania, was crowned king of Poland by marrying the princess Hedwige.

The condition of this agreement was the Christianization of Lithuania.

1392 - 1430

Reign of Vytautas the Great and expansion of the country from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Lithuania became one of the largest country in Europe.

1410

Tannenberg victory against the Teutonic Knights, won by the Great Duke Vytautas and the Jagiellonian king of Poland.

1569

Union of Lublin and creation of the Polish-Lithuanian State, until 1795.

1795 - 1915

Annexation by Russia of Lithuania, following the 3rd partition of Poland.

Proclamation of the Independence of Lithuania.

1921

Lithuania became a member of the League (League of Nations).

1940-1941

1st Soviet occupation after the Nazi-Soviet pact of 1939.

1941-1944

German occupation.

1944 - 1990

2nd Soviet occupation.

11/03/1990

Restoration of the independence of Lithuania.

09/1992

Lithuania became a member of the United Nations.

05/1993

Lithuania became a member of the Council of Europe.

01/04/2004

Lithuania became a member of NATO.

01/05/2004

Entrance into the European Union.
